Should Chicago be concerned more about the kids getting murdered or the Olympics?
Q. Chicago has spent 70 million just to bid on the Olympics. There will be budget overruns and end up costing endless amounts of cash. Daley's friends will end up getting the development deals and jobs. At the same time, kids have been getting murdered in this town left and right. There was just a kid beaten critical on the north side, after there was a kid beaten to death on the far south side.

A. Amen. There is no way Chicago would get this bid, no more than Detroit. You need to clean up the house before you show it. And will we pay this on our kids tab again like everything else lately? When does it end? I am betting that Spain gets this. Chicago is a bad idea. Rio is a good idea. At least they will not have to panhandle the money to fund it. Stupid idea; great question. Some people have zero common sense.

Projects can fail for too many reasons to mention. Doesn't that mean we should keep records we can consult ?
Q. Alternative to keeping records is to believe "In my experience of the corporate world projects fail for any number of reasons including poor planning, failure of control systems, inadequate supervision, budget overruns, far too many to mention and record keeping really would have little to do with it,as keeping records does not solve fundamental flaws.you can keep as many records as you like,if a project fails it fails and keeping a record of it won't stop failure or prevent poor project management." But mightn't "project management" be simply keeping records which we can then consult? To avatar: Terrific. Thanks.

Do you think the time is getting ripe for a strong leader to step in and save the USA?
Q. I mean with all the bad economic developments, the record foreclosures, the loss of jobs, inflation, high cost of energy, middle class shrinking and lower class rising, budget and trade deficits, illegals overrunning our borders, not to mention the islamo fascists that want to chop off all of our heads...Do you think the time is ripe for a strong leader to save us?? A leader who is willing to break a few eggs to make the omelette and willing to play by his own rules?

A. Ya, and that leader's name is definitely not Hilliary, unless you have a deathwish and want to spread it with the rest of America.

this problem solving has got me beat. no wonder it's a challenge problem.?
Q. Imagine you want to paint the world's largest smiley face on the world's largest billboard. The billboard is as long as a football field (goal line to goal line) and has a height-to-width ratio of 3/5. The store was all out of industrial-grade yellow paint in the 5-gallon can, but offered to sell you the quart cans wholesale at $2.85 each plus tax. The budget committee has only approved exactly enough money to buy 190 cans by the gallon (based on your previously quoted price of $14.19 per gallon plus 4% tax). You notice that the label says each five-gallon can covers 4,420 square feet if you only put on a single (although rather thin) coat. You had planned on using three coats due to weather deterioration/the environment. This project… [cont.]

A. Break down the problem. Billboard size is 100 by 100(3/5) which is 100 by 60 feet Smiley face must have a diameter of 60 ft Area of the face is pi(r)^2 which is 3.14(30)(30) which is 2826 sq ft but subtract out the area of each eye which we know is pi(150)(150) which is 70650 sq iches PER eye. We know there are 144 sq in in a sq foot so divide the 70560 by 144 and get 490.625 per eye so multiply that by 2 to get 981.25 sqft. So subtract that from the sqft of the face which is 2826 - 981.25 = 1844.75 sq feet for the face. So this is a start. Just keep on following the logic of the problem and you will get there. Step by step. Good Luck!

Why is the U.S government spending $592 million to build a massive U.S. embassy (w/ apt. buildings) in Iraq?
Q. On the west bank of the Tigris river the U.S. government is constructing its largest embassy to date. It seems that spending $10 billion a month on the policing of Iraq isn't enough. This massive project is surrounded by a huge wall so that the fortress can't be seen from ground level. It can only be viewed from the roof of the Babylon hotel, across the river. The budget for completion is at $592 million. But as recent as today the project is anticipated to overrun by another $144 million. The sprawling fort will sit upon 104 acres of desert surrounded by a wall that is "impregnable" from any physical attack. Wasn't the ship, the Titanic also termed as unsinkable? A. Because America has become no different than any other communist country. Lies, greed, secrecy. Why do we have billions of dollars unaccounted? Why are we buying steel from China to build a wall instead of using American steel? Why are we selling off American interests? Why can't you shop in any Mall, and find clothing made in America? Why are jobs leaving the country and illegals brought in to fill minimum wage or less jobs? Why has this administration blocked all investigation by declaring everything executive privilege and classified? Big brother has taken over and leaders no longer care what the people want. Vote out incumbents who don't work for the people. It's our last chance to change government. Wake up!

How do you go about building a solid walkway down a slope? What materials would be best?
Q. My parents' home is on a hillside and for years they've battled with the walkway leading to it from the driveway. There's probably a foot or more of gravel on the walkway, but it gets overrun pretty quickly by grass, or the gravel washes to the bottom and causes problems with drainage. I've been looking for information on how to build a stable walkway for them of either pavers or poured concrete and so far I've found very little about what else needs to be done with it being on a slope. Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated as my father has recently started using a wheelchair and we're concerned about the chair making ruts or getting stuck in the mud when the spring rain starts. Also, hiring a contractor is out of the question,… [cont.]

No. For part of your 'problem' in this question - you are replacing the responsibility of people owning their own lives (ie: the whole food thing) and blaming their inability to 'push away from the table' or get up and exercise on a country, when really it is up to the individual to take responsibility for themselves...or not - their choice. And it is really easy to say "I would do everything within my power to protect my country from being overrun" and yet not support the very people and actions that, while sometimes distasteful, are required to do that very thing. In 2008 Afghanistan firefight, US weapons failed! washington it was chaos during the early morning assault last year on a remote U.S. outpost in Afghanistan and Staff Sgt. A. Wow. Quite a rant. I did not read it because this is a subject that is close to my heart. The AK-47 is superior weapon to the M4, but you cannot take accurate, long-range shots with it as you can the M4. However, the M16 has always been plagued by malfunctions under stressful conditions. It is plagued by malfunctions under any conditions. When it is cleaned to the specifications of the USMC, the buffer return spring rattles in the stock, making it sound like a toy. And having Mattel stamped on the same stock (M16-A2) does little to alleviate this feeling. The AK-47 can be dropped in a mud puddle, picked up and fired. The M4 runs on CLP more than bullets and you pretty much have to stop the war to clean your rifle. These… [cont.]

Risk Mgmt Question/Calculation?
Q. Teloxy Engineering was contracted to design/build 10,000 units of a new product. Mgm felt this product could be done so at a low cost. One small component was required to build the product to be purchased for $60 in the marketplace. Mgmt budgeted $650,000 for purchasing/handling of 10,000 components plus scrap. The engineering team discovers the final design will need a higher-grade component that sells for $72 versus the $60 that was budgeted for therefore equals cost overruns. The manufacturing team says that internally they can produce a max of 10,000 as req'd at $40 cost with $100,000 setup fee but has never manufactured this product before. % defective is 0,10,20,30,40 and probability of occurrence is 10,20,30,25,15. All defective… [cont.]

A. I had difficulty in understanding the question so I'll just make a few observations. Let me know if this helps or if I am on the wrong track. Initially, the budget was $650,000. A $60 component was to be used in each part leaving $50,000 to produce all 10,000 items ($5 per item). This does not seem realistic given the information provided further down. The $60 component has to be replaced by a $72 component so now the cost to produce 10,000 items is now $720,000 and assuming nothing else changes in the manufacturing process, the added $5 per item cost budgeted for above brings the new cost estimate to $770,000. Now all of a sudden, the manufacturing team says the cost per item will be $40 (not $5) plus a $100,000 setup fee, so the… [cont.]

Building Contract Agreement question?
Q. If a builder's contract says the following: "Builder will make changes to the Plans and Specifications after Owner's written authorization to Builder for such changes.." does this mean that ANY changes to the contract, including cost overruns, has to be approved by me? For example, if a septic system was budgeted for $9,000 but actually cost $19,000, would it be required for me to give signed consent for this overrun? Because my builder spent $36,000 in overruns without my knowledge or signed consent. Do I have a legal leg to stand on here? Thanks for your help.

A. I assume that the builder is actually a general contractor that is building the house on your land. If this is the case, you are 100% responsible for any cost overruns. If you are buying a house in a subdivision and when it's finished you settle, then any cost overruns or expenses not agreed to up front is the builders respons. I'm sure there is more to this story then you posted. However, based just on what you have posted, this has to due with changes and not money. The builder will only make changes if they are in writing. For example: we offer a standard house with set options. If you want to add or change something (like an extension), this request MUST be in writing and signed by both parties.

Q. What do U think County spent millions on welfare for illegal immigrants' American children?
Q. San Bernardino County spent nearly $64 million in state and federal money last year to provide welfare benefits to the American-born children of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants aren't entitled to welfare. But their citizen children are. Nationwide, one-in-three immigrant-headed households uses at least one major welfare program, compared to 19 percent of native households, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington D.C.-based think tank that advocates immigration reduction. In California, 192,660 citizen children are getting welfare checks passed through their illegal immigrant parents. That costs $546 million a year in state, federal and county funds, officials say. Some lawmakers say it's an expense… [cont.]
