In common usage, an expense or expenditure is an outflow of money to another person or group to pay for an item or service, or for a category of costs. For a tenant, rent is an expense. For students or parents, tuition is an expense. Buying food, clothing, furniture or an automobile is often referred to as an expense. An expense is a cost that is "paid" or "remitted", usually in exchange for something of value. Something that seems to cost a great deal is "expensive". Something that seems to cost little is "inexpensive". "Expenses of the table" are expenses of dining, refreshments, a feast, etc.

In accounting, expense has a very specific meaning. It is an outflow of cash or other valuable assets from a person or company to another person or company. This outflow of cash is generally one side of a trade for products or services that have equal or better current or future value to the buyer than to the seller. Technically, an expense is an event in which an asset is used up or a liability is incurred. In terms of the accounting equation, expenses reduce owners' equity. The International Accounting Standards Board defines expenses as

...decreases in economic benefits during the accounting period in the form of outflows or depletions of assets or incurrences of liabilities that result in decreases in equity, other than those relating to distributions to equity participants.

How much expenses to expect for a holiday in vancouver island?
Q. i'm from asia. I'm planning to visit a friend who lives in vancouver island and i'm charting my expenses for travelling and food. How much should I expect in spending for food on a daily basis? I would also be most appreciative if you have other miscellaneous expenses to add to that. Thank you.

A. I think it would be safe to say to leave at least $30 for budget food a day, $100 plus a night for budget accomodations, travelling is really hard to figure out, but gas is currently $1.20 a litre, so figure out how many litres/km you will be going. Don't forget the ferry costs $50 plus per trip. You will run into costs to visit museums, parks, art galleries, etc.

Deduct travel expenses from tripif photographing scenics & submitting them to stock photo businesses?
Q. I'm a retired pro photographer and want to travel (with my husband as assistant) and take photos to submit to stock photography companies. Scenics, local cultures, wildlife, etc. How much of my travel expenses can I legally deduct from my USA income tax? Opinions? Experiences?

A. If the principal purpose of your travel is for business then you can deduct those costs, but you must prorate them between the business and personal purposes. If the principal purpose is personal then you can only deduct the portions of lodging and meals (at 50% on the meals) that are directly attributable to the business purpose. No travel and transportation is deductible. If the IRS determines that this is more of a hobby than a true business they will further limit any deductions that are allowable to the income you generated from selling the pictures. In this case the income goes on line 21 of Form 1040 and the allowable expenses go on Schedule A as a Miscellaneous Deduction.

Can you deduct medical expenses if you received a settlement from a third party insurance claim?
Q. I had an accident with a table saw resulting in the amputation of several fingers. I did not have health insurance at the time. I sued the owner of the table saw and received a settlement through their homeowner's insurance. Are the medical expenses deductible?

A. Not unless your medical expenses exceeded what you received in the settlement. You could only deduct the amount of the excess expenses that exceeds 7.5% of your income on 1040 line 38. Schedule A specifically says "Caution. Do not include expenses reimbursed or paid by others."
