Working capital, also known as "WC", is a financial metric which represents operating liquidity available to a business. Along with fixed assets such as plant and equipment, working capital is considered a part of operating capital. It is calculated as current assets minus current liabilities. If current assets are less than current liabilities, an entity has a working capital deficiency, also called a working capital deficit. Net working capital is working capital minus cash (which is a current asset) and minus interest bearing liabilities (i.e. short term debt). It is a derivation of working capital, that is commonly used in valuation techniques such as DCFs (Discounted cash flows). Working Capital = Current Assets − Current Liabilities A company can be endowed with assets and profitability but short of liquidity if its assets cannot readily be converted into cash. Positive working capital is required to ensure that a firm is able to continue its operations and that it has sufficient funds to satisfy both maturing short-term debt and upcoming operational expenses. The management of working capital involves managing inventories, accounts receivable and payable and cash. From Wikipedia under the

Q. In calculating the Working Capital Cycle, we add debtors payment period and stock holding days then we minus creditors payment period. The answer is usually positive, what if one gets a negative answer? is it ok? Asked by Habib M - Wed Nov 7 17:32:04 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you think about the logic of getting a negative number in your calculation it means that what you purchase and sell turns into cash quicker than you have to pay your creditors. This is a good thing - a negative number but positive cash flow. In the UK in the 1980's the discount food retailer Kwiksave made no money at all on the food it sold but lots of money in interest due to the timing difference in its working capital cycle - sales were made on cash creditors were paid 30 - 60 days later. That negative number you get can be the foundation of a business model! Answered by Daniel B - Wed Nov 7 18:01:49 2007 What does it mean when one says "Reducing Working Capital"?
Q. Does "reducing working capital" mean you are reducing the net current assets or does it mean reducing for example inventory thereby increasing the cash funds? Asked by JC eire - Wed Apr 14 07:23:26 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Working capital = current assets - current liabilities. If current assets decrease, that would lead to a reduction in working capital, all else being equal. If you sell inventory for cash, that wouldn't change the working capital number. You would have simply exchanged one current asset (inventory) for another current asset (cash).
